About Sydney CBD

The Sydney CBD area is the main commercial area in Sydney and is well serviced by banks, restaurants, shops, post offices and public transport.

BANKS

All the major banks have a branch in the city centre; ANZ, HSBC, Westpac, The Commonwealth Bank, St. George and National Bank.

Opening hours are 9:30am to 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday, and 9:30 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays. Automatic Teller Machines (ATM’s) are available 24 hours at most banks, but you should avoid using them late at night, for security reason.

When you go to your preferred bank to open an account, you will need to take your Passport with you. As well as 2 other forms of identification and also tell the bank officer that you are a student. We suggest you take your student card with you.

POST OFFICE

The General Post Office (GPO) is only 5 minutes walk from ELSIS located at 1 Martin Place (corner of George Street and Martin Place). There are also postal services. There is also a post shop 1 minute from ELSIS, on the corner of Market and York street.

Opening hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday, and they offer a range of services including payment of bills, stationary items, cards and wrapping, faxing, calendars and diaries and small gifts, as well as the usual range of postal services. Some major post offices are open on Saturday mornings.

SHOPPING

The Sydney city area has many shopping areas, department stores and arcades. The Queen Victoria Building (QVB) and Pitt Street Mall are close by including the major Department Stores (David Jones and Myers), supermarkets (Woolworths and Coles), and several chemists, clothes, shoes, homewares and furniture, music, books, giftware and toy shops close to ELSIS.

Opening hours vary, but are generally 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on Thursday.

EATING

Sydney city centre offers a wide range of eating choices from cheap take away to expensive restaurants, covering many different cuisines. There are also several Asian supermarkets located in Chinatown and health food shops located in the shopping centre.
